How One Restaurant Pivoted To Preserve The Future Of Their Business

I am a big fan and recommend the “How I built This Podcast” with Guy Raz.. He had Simon Sinek on as a guest in April to discuss how businesses can build resiliency and why resiliency is important right now.

Simon Sinek told a story about a small Pizza Shop in Chicago. 70% of the Pizza Shop’s revenue came from customers purchasing single slices. Once the state’s lockdown was put in place, 70% of their revenue disappeared. Instead of accepting the situation and risking the future of their business, they decided to pivot and react.

The owner of the restaurant did some research and realized their pizza ovens were hot enough to actually bend plastic. They switched from making pizzas to producing personal protect equipment for the medical community. Once they started making masks, their mask business made up for most of the business they lost from customers purchasing slices of pizza.

What can businesses learn from this? There are a lot of things outside of your control as a business owner. Your attitude, effort, and ability to pivot are key when operating a company during a crisis. While circumstances won’t be ideal, you can always work towards a solution by thinking outside of the box.
